Chair Yoga

Chair Yoga classes are appropriate for those with MS, Parkinson’s Disease, Fibromyalgia, cancer survivors and other conditions, or those who want a slower paced class. The class is open to students who use walkers, canes, and wheelchairs.  Chair Yoga is suitable for all ages, fitness levels and physical conditions.

Chair Yoga is a unique yoga style that adapts yoga positions and poses through creative use of a chair or wheelchair. The chair replaces the yoga mat and becomes an extension of the body. The student is able to warm up the body safely and perform yoga poses with more support and stability. Poses are done seated on the chair or wheelchair and an additional chair is used for support during side extensions and leg or arm stretches.

Students will benefit from the practice of yoga and may see improved range of motion and flexibility, involvement in a social activity, strengthened muscles and joints, and reduced stress. Chair Yoga includes yoga poses for the body, breathing exercises, and relaxation techniques.

Hatha Yoga:

Hatha yoga includes a set of physical exercises designed to align the muscles and bones and open the many energy channels of the body, especially the spine, so that energy can flow freely.  Hatha yoga is intended to create a balance of strength and flexiblity in the body.  A powerful tool for self-actualization and transformation.  Hatha yoga requires that one pay special attention to the breatth, which helps calm the mind.  This allows the practitioner to become more present in each moment, resulting in more self-awareness and relaxation.

This style of yoga is not about twisting yourself into a pretzel or standing on your head; it is about gentle, slow moving postures that bring health, enjoyment, and well-being into your life.  This class is a great compliment your weekly cardio and strength training workouts.

This is an all-levels class and does NOT include sun saluations.  The class will focus on flexibility, breath, balance and incorporate postures that allow us to mobilize all joints of our body - back, shoulders, arms, neck, hips, legs, feet and fingers.  We utilize multiple yoga poses to stretch the hips and hamstrings, which aids with eliminating lower back pain. Also, the class provides a supportive atmosphere for your individual concerns (shoulders, knees, lower back, etc) and allows for personal attention and modification of poses.

This gentle and slower-paced approach makes it more accessible to people of all sizes, ages, and fitness levels.  Hatha Yoga is non-competitive and most poses are easily modified to fit the individual needs of the practitioner.  This class is a MUST for runners, strength trainers or anyone who works out hard and needs an active rest day.  It is also perfect for the person who sits for long periods of time or for the athlete looking for a way to lessen stiffness and risk of injury due to training.

Relaxation (Savasana) ends the class.  You will start to see an improvement in your health, overall wellness, sleep and flexiblity within a few classes!

Hatha Flow Yoga:

Hatha Flow links the postures practiced in a regular Hatha class into a sequence of movements that "flow" with the breath in a more vigorous series. Hatha Flow involves moving from pose to pose with very little rest in between.  This class is a strength building, cardiovascular workout!  Hatha Flow also differs from Hatha Yoga in that it also incorporates binds, longer holds, occassional inversions and arm balances.  We focus on linking breath with movement and more intermediate postures may be incorporated throughout.

Hatha Flow is open for beginners and continuing students interested in exploring a more movement-oriented and challenging class.  Hatha Flow builds strength, endurance, and a strong focus on the movement-breath connection. The classroom is not heated, but the physical practice will naturally build heat in the body.

Variations on the Sun Salutation are used to link poses.  The class format, in no particular order, includes a standing sequence, balancing poses, seated poses and maybe an inversion and arm balance or two. As in all Hatha classes, relaxation (Savasana) ends the class. This practice is joyful, therapeutic, and inspiring. Regardless of your exercise of choice, you'll find this class to be the "missing link" to your current fitness regimen.

Restorative Therapeutic Yoga

Although all forms of yoga practice can have far-reaching physical and psychological benefits, Restorative yoga is intended to supersede those levels of relaxation and renewal.  This style of yoga is used to trigger the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for balancing the body. By stimulating this system, you experience a lower heart rate and blood pressure. This also helps stimulate your immune and endocrine systems in healthy way. When you experience stress or feel overwhelmed, it the parasympathetic nervous system that restores balance. The deep relaxation response elicited by restorative yoga also results in benefit to internal organs.

During this class, we will move slowly from one pose to the next and use props to get more deeply into each pose. Once in the pose, we will stay in the poses longer and focus on breath and relaxation as we actually permanently lengthen muscles.  This class is more of a passive form of yoga.  Of course, we will finish with our famous HourGlass Fitness and Wellness Savasana!
